Two Don’t Miss Events This Month

Tall Tribute

In 2020, California wildfires took aim at our trees. Ancient redwoods, giant sequoias and more than a million Joshua trees were lost. Journalist John Branch and photojournalist Max Whittaker chronicled the destruction of trees in The New York Times, and when Thor Steingraber read the story, he was touched. The executive and artistic director at the Soraya was ultimately inspired to create a musical that pays tribute to all the trees lost. He enlisted the help of violinist Etienne Gara (artist in residence at the performing arts center), and they put together a team of composers: Gabriella Smith and Grammy Award winners Steven Mackey and Billy Childs. The resulting three-part concert, Treelogy, will tour college campuses across the state. The performance is on February 23 at the Soraya.

Fabric of Our Lives

Quilts can be much more than warm bed covers or colorful wall hangings. The Fabric of a Nation: American Quilt Stories at the Skirball Cultural Center is a testament to this, featuring works by more than 40 diverse artists and covering five centuries of American quilts. The exhibition tells compelling human stories that narrate an intimate history of American life. The exhibit includes works by sculptor and painter Sanford Biggers as well as LA–based artists Sula Bermúdez-Silverman, Sabrina Gschwandtner, Joel Otterson and Ramsess. Also on display is a moving quilt from the Skirball’s own collection, “Ellis Island,” which depicts the Ashkenazi Jewish immigrant experience. Runs through March 12.
