If you haven’t been to Burbank's Tony’s Darts Away recently—or not at all, now might be the time, as Chef Caroline Concha is doing her part to raise funds during Breast Cancer Awareness month with her “Tots for Tatas” series. Each week in October, limited-edition gourmet tater tots will hit the Tony's menu, with $1 from each order going to The Keep A Breast Foundation.
Chef Caroline will offer one flavor per week (non-vegan) starting October 1 with Trufflozza with black pepper truffle oil and garlic truffle. Following in subsequent weeks: Asiana Carolina (sweet Thai chili sauce and ranch dill sauce); Smokey Tater (chipolata barbecue sauce and spicy coleslaw); Crafty Cajun (Cajun herb spice and garlic aioli); The Crazy Disco (topped with porcini gravy, frizzled onions, cheddar, blue cheese and griddle onions).
“Tater tots are the perfect bar food. They are easy to eat, crispy and an absolute favorite alongside a cold beer," says Chef Caroline. “I wanted to re-create them in a special way, and supporting Breast Cancer Awareness feels like the perfect fit.”
Since Tony’s opened more than four years ago, I've always thought of it as a dive bar with a twist. It’s among the most unique bars in all of Los Angeles, serving all-craft, all-draught, all-California craft beer in a "no-waste" environment, with a menu centered around a selection of artisan sausages (vegan and non-vegan) with an option of toppings to build your own.
Two of my faves: the apple sage or the Italian stallion. Chef Caroline also creates weekly menu specials, as well as a few salads. It's also really fun with games, a pool table and even some books. And if you choose to bike, there's a rack outside.
Also, the weekly "Tuesdays at Tony's" featuring specialty beer is always a good bet. Of note: Owner Tony Yanow also owns Mohawk Bend and Golden Road (pub and brewery), which each have their own unique spin on LA beer and food culture.
