TV Chef and Encino resident, Jeffrey Saad, is making plans to launch his new restaurant, La Ventura, at 11929 Ventura Blvd., in Studio City. The "modern Mexican" eatery, which will open in December, will be housed in the spot of the former Out Take Bistro. La Ventura is in the area of what has quickly become known as "Restaurant Row" here in the Valley. While those of us who live a bit more west on the boulevard might be disappointed he opted for the well-populated Studio City corridor (such slim pickings for dining west of Sepulveda!), Saad says the location had all the right factors for a swift opening with minimal renovations.
The charismatic and easy-going Saad was a finalist for the Next Food Network Star and Chopped All-Stars. He has also hosted his own show on the Cooking Channel, United Tastes of America. The new restaurant space, just east of Laurel Canyon, is currently under renovation. Saad, who has co-owned restaurants in San Francisco, say La Ventura's fare and vibe will be contemporary and sophisticated but simultaneously relaxed.
"When you walk in it won’t scream ‘this is a Mexican restaurant!’ You'll think this is a cool place to be. I want to hang out here. It will be modern and comfy with great style. When you taste it, if you are Mexican, you will say, ‘Oh my gosh this chef has been to the Yucatan!’ And, if you’ve never been to Mexico you'll think ‘I recognize these flavors!’" Saad shares.
Saad, known for mixing spices and food genres, will highlight the Asian and Latin flavors of certain menu items. "For example, we'll do calamari tacos with pineapple salsa—using a Chinese-style batter almost like a tempura—very light and crispy,” he states. “Or, we'll have chicken marinated in lemongrass with a serrano chile dipping sauce. But the flavor palate will be primarily Mexican with some other cultures mixed in." Saad has given us some rather enticing photos of a few of the entrees, which we’re sharing with you here: Tortilla Soup with Cumin-Spiced Pork, Grilled Achiote Veggie Tostadas with Goat Cheese, along with Grilled Corn with Cilantro Pesto and Cotija Cheese. Sold. Hurry up and open, will 'ya?
