Brothers Sushi and Little Brother Sushi operate three blocks apart in Woodland Hills. Goro Uehara owns both locations. Brothers has been around for more than three decades; Little Brother arrived in 2005 but apparently hasn’t learned all of big bro’s tricks.
Brothers Sushi serves standout sushi dishes that you can only get there. Tired of the lines at Katsu-Ya? Head a few miles west, my friends, for a creative alternative. Grab a seat at the speckled grey sushi bar in front of a seasoned chef (possibly Taka-san), and by all means scour the white board, blackboard and handwritten specials. But don’t leave before ordering three exceptional signature dishes.
Sautéed shrimp roll ($9.50) features a cut roll of sweet shrimp, cucumber and masago (crunchy orange smelt eggs) resting in a shallow pool of butter garlic sauce. For an extra $2.50, they’ll substitute lobster.
Rich Taco ($13.50) is a fun play on a taco subbing crispy soy paper for typical corn tortillas. Silky yellowfin tuna, firm yellowtail, delicately fried shrimp tempura, creamy avocado, onion and smelt egg form a harmonious filling.
3-Egg Sushi ($MP) is the third leg you’ll need to stabilize your sushi stool. Bursting ikura (salmon roe), raw cracked quail egg and spicy wasabi tobiko arrive cinched with nori belts.
This deft textural balancing act in creating these three dishes is nothing short of artistry, and you won’t find another place like them down the street—or anywhere else.
