Calabasas’ rustic Saddle Peak Lodge is a special occasion kind of place. Nestled far from it all amid the oaks off Las Virgenes Canyon Road, even the scenic drive can make Saddle Peak feel like a destination.
Of course, special occasion means expensive, right? But Saddle Peak’s money-saving secret has been its Monday/Tuesday Supper menu special: three courses for just $35. That’s the usual price (and up) for just an entrée here. And as of this month, you can get this deal—truly a steal—on Wednesdays and Thursdays as well.
The Supper menu, which changes monthly, features your choice from two starters, three entrees and two desserts. On a visit last week starters were a mixed baby beet salad with pumpkin seed granola, California goat cheese, herb salad, raisin mustard and pickled grapes, or fennel or leek soup. Entrees: jidori chicken, rainbow trout with lemon-caper butter sauce and filet mignon ($7 extra). Dessert is mango panna cotta or a brownie with Bourbon Barrel ice cream.
Rainbow trout: the caper butter sauce will be poured by your waiter
These dishes are even more delicious than they sound (although for the desserts, the brownie takes the cake). And you get Saddle Peak’s unhurried and impeccable service regardless of the discount price—including hot pretzel rolls served with butter and salt.
No ordinary bread basket here. The pretzel roll is a course in itself.
Yes, deer: A little taxidermy means all eyes are on your meal.
