Sierra Canyon School is a nondenominational, college preparatory school enrolling more than 900 student in grades Early Kindergarten through 12th. Founded in 1978, the School has two campuses in the Chatsworth area. With a total of 35 acres, Sierra Canyon has one of the largest independent school footprints in Southern California. From rigorous course offerings to spirited athletics competitions; inspired visual and performing arts productions; and heartfelt charity, Sierra Canyon School cultivates a dynamic learning environment. The School is currently accepting applications for fall 2013.

What would you like kids and parents to know about your school?

“Sierra Canyon is one of the most diverse schools in LA County, if not California—in both ethnicity and socio-economics. We budget more than $3.5 million in financial assistance for families who might not otherwise be able to attend Sierra Canyon. We cater to families all over the LA area and have families attending our school from more than 95 different zip codes.”

What sets your school apart from the rest?

“Our sense of community. Our children love to come to school and be a part of this community. Our faculty support the children in all aspects of their development—whether it is in the classroom, attending a play or musical or coming together at a sporting event.”

What are the most important skills for people who want to work successfully with children?

“To know that children learn at different rates and speeds, especially in early childhood. One size does NOT fit all. We individualize instruction so our students are learning at a pace and rate that is comfortable for them. We must be able to help them reach their maximum potential, and you can’t do that with one classroom with one teacher.”

What are the biggest benefits of making the children of our community a priority?

“These children are our future! We need to give them the tools, not only in the classroom, but in life lessons on how to be a mature, successful adults. We are teaching children to be good members of society and to make good choices. Not only can they do well academically, but they are surrounded by like-minded kids who are active participants in being a good role model.”.
