Shish Mediterranean has offered Angelenos a “taste of Istanbul” in a Studio City strip mall since 2011, making this one of the only Turkish restaurants in the city. It’s also a good one. The space houses mottled tan walls with Istanbul travel posters, Turkish memorabilia and wood tables. The photo menu on the wall provides a pretty standard spread of kebabs, pita sandwiches, salads and dips, but this restaurant from Cecilia Sam, son Donny and family does carry some key differentiators.
Iskender kebab involves gyro meat, toasted pita bread, tomato sauce, and yogurt with garlic and mint. Adana kebab features a grilled mix of lean ground beef, parsley, onions and black pepper. Beyti kebab ($15.49) is even more interesting, featuring grilled adana kebab (ground beef and lamb) rolled with lavash bread and dressed with yogurt and tomato sauce, with a substantial pile of rice in the middle.
Kunefe ($6.95) is made to order, baked until hot and crusty with a nest of toasted vermicelli like strands, a cache of snow-white, unsalted cheese with memorable pull, and a drizzle of sugar syrup.

Food is pretty darn good, too.
