September 17 marked a new era for the high-traffic corner of Ventura Boulevard and Coldwater Canyon Avenue as Sharky’s replaced a classic Googie building in Studio City that first housed a Denny’s and last contained Twain’s. Steve Paperno started Sharky’s, his fast-casual Mexican chain, in what is now Valley Village. Studio City is the 25th location and features a wraparound patio, silver tables, wood floor, dark green booths and banquettes, olive green and orange accents, and mesquite cooking.
Their motto, “Feel Good About Eating,” places an emphasis on handcrafted salsas and guac and local, organic ingredients like baby greens, broccoli, peppers and romaine. By the register, Sharky’s touts wild-caught Alaskan salmon, mahi mahi and wahoo.
Yes, you’ll find familiar Sharky’s favorites like tacos, burritos, stacked chicken enchiladas, nachos grandes and power plates. This is the first Sharky’s where you’ll find a breakfast menu, which breaks down into four key categories: Burritos, Tacos, Eggs & More and Sweet Morning, with one vegan option available at each turn.
Breakfast burritos include organic, cage-free eggs and a choice of flour or whole-wheat tortilla. Their breakfast taco features an organic fried egg, breakfast potatoes, organic greens, fire-roasted salsa, radish, red onion and cotija cheese on double-stacked, non-GMO corn or flour tortillas. Stacked breakfast enchiladas top non-GMO corn tortillas with tomatillo cheese sauce, cheese, organic eggs, spinach and pico de gallo.
Chilaquiles feature chips tossed in ranchero sauce, topped with sour cream, two sunny-side-up organic eggs, avocado and cotija cheese. A skillet of slow-cooked pork hash co-stars roasted breakfast potatoes, two sunny-side-up organic eggs and avocado slices.
Seemingly no LA breakfast menu can survive without avocado toast at this point, and Sharky’s version combines organic rustic wheat toast, smashed avocado, scrambled organic eggs, wild-caught salmon and salsa verde. Sweeter options include cinnamon brioche French toast; tri-color quinoa oatmeal with steel-cut oats, fresh fruit, milk and brown sugar; and whole-grain pancakes with maple syrup. A salsa bar by the register touts six different options, including original (medium), fire-roasted (medium), pico de gallo (mild), santo verde (medium), avocado (hot) and killer hot (self-explanatory).
Aguas frescas include pineapple lime, watermelon basil, Jamaica, plus fresh-squeezed OJ. They also serve Groundwork Coffee and Art of Tea hot tea.
