Tired of your standard turkey and Swiss on rye? You may want to check out the new Sandwich Shoppe on Cahuenga (near the Studio City border). The cafe serves a style of sandwich that we’ll bet you’ve never had before.
Erik’s Famous Russian Sandwich ($12) is a tasty, towering beast that takes two hands to eat. The Russian-style salad combines eggs, potatoes, peas, carrots and crunchy dill pickles—all chopped, tossed with mayo, topped with cilantro and basil for brightness, and served on soft, warm rye bread. At home the owner’s family makes this salad and eats it for three days straight, sometime adding beef or chicken. Here, a fully vegetarian version is made daily and served with a dill pickle spear.
You’ve got to work a little bit to find the café. The Sandwich Shoppe resides down the hill from Universal City, under a psychic reader’s office and next to a gas station. But if you are up for a lunchtime gastronomic adventure, it’s definitely worth the effort.
