Sabzee Mediterranean Market, a pan-Med grocery store, butcher shop, bakery and café with an olive green awning, debuted in Encino in 2014. Owner Hoss Zadeh has an octopus-like handle on all of Sabzee’s facets. If you were to visit just for the bumpy, house-baked sangak bread or charcoal-grilled meats, you’d be in good shape. Let’s focus on the twin rows of steam tables, which host a rotating array of stews, rice dishes and proteins.
If you’re lucky, Sabzee will even serve their stupendous trout plate. For $10.99, they serve a juicy, skin-on trout filet marinated with garlic, salt, black pepper and saffron, which stains the fish yellow. Each slab is coated in a light dusting of whole-wheat flour, deep-fried and plated on a bed of fluffy basmati rice that’s tossed with fava beans and herbs (sabzee). If you ask nicely, the counterman may also toss in a swath of chewy, pliable sangak. Take your Styrofoam container on the road or grab a seat at an olive green table on the front patio.
