Ruby’s Shake Shop Brings Nouveau Retro Charm to NoHo Arts District

Thanks to Ruby’s Shake Shop, the NoHo Arts District now has a stylish nouveau retro burger and shake shop. This casual entry from Ruby’s Diner may tout milkshakes, but burgers warrant top billing.

Their “double deluxe” burger teams two griddled beef patties with two American cheese slices, crisp iceberg lettuce, sliced tomato and Thousand Island dressing on a soft bun. Ruby’s also sells burgers starring spicy turkey, portobello mushroom and a meat-free “Impossible” patty.

For those who come for the shakes, Ruby’s serves 12 different varieties including a few malts. In addition to the classics, flavors include peanut butter, salted caramel and chocolate chip cookie dough.

Until 11 a.m., they also serve four breakfast items, including an “el gordo” burrito, cinnamon roll French toast and “awesome” egg sandwich with two fried eggs, American cheese, avocado and bacon on grilled Parmesan sourdough.

Even though Ruby’s feels timeless, the chain has only been around since 1982, when Doug Cavanaugh opened the original at the end of Newport Beach’s Balboa Pier. He named it after his mother. And, yes, an image of her from her high school cheerleading days adorns every outpost—including this one.

The North Hollywood “shake shop” is an entirely outdoor venue, featuring an aqua, red and white color scheme. Order at one window, pick up at the next window and sit at either high-top or counter seats.
