The Valley has seen the rise of many dessert trends over the past several years, including cupcakes, actual cakes and of course ice cream. Now longtime chef Serge Zargaryan is betting on French almond flour cookie sandwiches with the September 13 opening of Royal Macaron in Valley Village.
Serge’s regal sweets shop is located in Laurel Plaza shopping plaza. An orange stucco and tile facade gives way to a cafe with orange walls, flat-screen TVs and round tables with colorful orange, green and blue chairs. The space previously housed a mac ‘n’ cheese restaurant called Mac-O-Licious.
Royal Macaron serves Italian espresso drinks, fruit smoothies and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Really, though, it’s all about the case devoted to colorful macarons. Serge produces 18 to 20 different macarons daily, including peanut butter and jelly, pistachio, lavender and green apple marmalade. Seasonal options include pumpkin pie spice and candy cane peppermint with brownie center. Jessica Special is the most personal macaron in the case, named for the owner’s daughter and featuring almond with maraschino cherries and white chocolate. Royal macarons cost $2.50 each or $25 per dozen.
