Rodini Park, the NoHo Arts District home to baklava cheesecake, apparently has deep wells of creativity when it comes to Greek food. En route from the front door to the cash register, you’ll pass by a refrigerated case featuring slabs of Greek pie that aren’t listed anywhere on the overhead menu.
Peter Georges, Dave Dickert, Joseph Gitto, and Joe Veni opened Rodini Park to start 2016 featuring many favorite foods from Peter’s youth in the Greek hotbed of Astoria, Queens, along with dishes inspired by his travels. Classic Greek pies made with flaky phyllo dough include spanakopita (spinach and cheese) and tiropita (cheese). Rodini Park serves spanakopita, plus four lesser-seen varieties ($4.95 to $8.75): leek, chicken, beef and lamb, and salmon.
Leek pie is based on a version that Peter enjoyed at Yaya’s Bakery in Astoria. Peter even flew the yaya (grandmother) to Los Angeles to share her recipe, which also calls for feta. He and his wife also experienced an over-the-top salmon torte in Ventura, and they decided to translate a streamlined version for Rodini Park with roasted red bell peppers, Swiss, spinach and feta.
Each pie features thin layers of phyllo dough at the top and bottom, brushed with butter and canola oil so the dough doesn’t stick. A final application of egg yolk helps to crisp and darken the dough. Herbs and spices in each and every pie include salt, black pepper, garlic powder, nutmeg and ground cayenne.
No matter what pie you order, Rodini Park will gladly supply house-made sauces. Choose from options like tzatziki, tahini, garlic oregano and Greek chile.
