Andre Guerrero’s longtime dream to open a ramen shop came to fruition at the end of October when he reclaimed the Sherman Oaks space that previously housed two of his restaurants—Max and Marché—and installed Ramen Room. The vaunted chef behind popular burger duo The Oinkster and Highland Park neighborhood favorite Maximiliano revamped the Brats Brothers space.
Now you’ll find a covered patio with dark wood tables. The dining room touts exposed wood beams, reclaimed wood banquettes, dark wood tables, a ramen bar with lime green stools, and a mix of rectangular and capsule lanterns. Upbeat music played during our initial visit, including Michael Jackson’s “P.Y.T.” and New Radicals’ “You Get What You Give.”
Starters include caramel fish sauce chicken wings, honey glazed chashu ribs, spicy tuna rolls and lumpia. Yes, lumpia. Andre is Filipino-American, so some of his culture’s comfort food classics made the cut. His lumpia are crispy cigars filled with shrimp and pork, served with a sweet spicy dipping sauce.
Ramen Room focuses on three members of the ramen pantheon—tonkotsu, shio and spicy miso—but he also pulls from the Filipino playbook with his chicken rice noodles. The Filipino-inspired chicken soup base features fish sauce and ginger and comes loaded with poached chicken, tender chunks of green papaya, cilantro and scallions. The finishing touch is a tiny bowl of crispy deep-fried chicken cracklings. Ramen Room also serves a vegetarian ramen with mushroom broth and fillings that include bamboo shoots, baked tofu, shiitake, bunapi and king oyster mushrooms.
For people who don’t enjoy noodle soup (those people exist?), Ramen Room serves rice bowls. A meaty bowl comes with either grilled pork or chicken, lumpia, green salad, shiitake mushrooms, Napa cabbage, bean sprouts, scallions and a white rice base. Their veggie bowl subs baked tofu for the grilled meat and lumpia.
