What: The Cheesemongers of Sherman Oaks opens April 8, specializing in cut-to-order artisan and farmstead cheeses, cured meats and “cheese-centric” sandwiches, as well as a collection of handmade and local crackers, jams, olives, chocolates, oils, nuts and other accompaniments.
Who: Partners Kia Burton and Chaz Christianson together bring an impressive cheese and charcuterie background to the table. Kia has worked at some of the world’s most renowned cheese shops, including Cowgirl Creamery in San Francisco and Neal’s Yard Dairy in London. Chaz trained at the Culinary Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona, and apprenticed with Master Chef Neal Fraser of Grace, BLD and Redbird. He honed his craft at the BLD charcuterie counter.
What to expect: Don’t expect to come in just buy a piece of cheese or sliced meat. Kia and Chaz want your visit to The Cheesemongers to provide you with background and history for every taste and purchase.
The inspiration: “We created Cheesemongers of Sherman Oaks because we believe that a taste of something truly amazing can change you. It can take you back in time to a cheese that’s been made the exact same way for over 1,000 years. Like a piece of art, a new cheese can move and inspire—a revelation of culinary innovation and creativity. Our cheese counter is a place where tasting is central, history and education are celebrated, and buying a piece of cheese is so much more than just another item off your grocery list."
