What: Kaiju Sushi finally opens today at 5 p.m. in the former Sweet Harts location at Woodman and Ventura (behind Vittelo's). From a peek through the window behind a hidden brown wood exterior, the sweet shop is totally unrecognizable and has been replaced with brick floors, sleek wood, hanging lanterns, semi-private booths, tables and a sushi bar.
Who: Owner Guy Starkman (of the second generation Jerry’s Famous Deli family) has brought in sushi chef Go Nakabayashi, whose past chef experience includes Koi in West Hollywood.
What to expect: Traditional sushi fare, Kaiju signature dishes (including ceviche and tartare on wontons), six versions of carpaccio, Japanese-style fried chicken and skewers of chicken, salmon and black cod. There are three crispy rice variations (spicy tuna, spicy shrimp and avocado/eel)—and with a seeming nod to the Sugarfish by Nozawa "trust me" concept: three set meals ($22 to $35).
Omakase: Chef Go will serve his special selections at the sushi bar only.
The drinks: Sake, shochu, three types of Japanese beer, one pinot grigio and one pinot noir.
