A few weeks ago I received this text message from my teen daughter: “GET SHAVED.”
I was a little tired and unfocused, so my mind started splintering off thinking about what she was telling me. Then it hit me. Get Shaved was the food truck we discovered a few years ago. We used to make trips to Northridge when their first brick-and-mortar version opened.
I texted back: “Northridge?”
“No! Sherman Oaks at Coldwater and Magnolia near Tony’s (Mexican Grill). It just opened where the yogurt shop was,” she texted back. And that was followed by another text: “SOOOO GOOD!!!”
Get Shaved was one of the first trucks on the food truck circuit about six years ago and has since opened four shops: the latest in Sherman Oaks, two in Northridge and one in Torrance. And frankly, it’s a welcome departure from frozen yogurt.
Based on Hawaiian shaved ice, Get Shaved presents a fusion of sweet homemade syrup (made with pure cane sugar) plus some choice add-on options. Block ice is shaved down to become light and fluffy—almost like fresh snow as opposed to ice. Due to the texture, the syrup gets sucked into the ice and flavors the concoction to the last drop.
Create a custom-made ice treat with a choice of “goodie” (ice cream, azuki beans or mochi balls), up to three syrup flavors (there are more than 30, including sugar-free), and a topping (sweetened condensed milk, li hing mui powder, sour spray, pico de gallo powder, caramel, marshmallow).
Getting creatively adventurous with these types of flavors doesn’t always work for me, so I like to go with one of their “tried and true” combinations.
These are my faves (with vanilla ice cream added—a must!):
Monkey Brains: strawberry and banana shaved ice topped with sweetened condensed milk
Root Beer Dream: root beer shaved ice topped with sweetened condensed milk
Let Them Eat Cake: blue vanilla, coconut and pineapple shaved ice with sweetened condensed milk
If you don’t have a yen for shaved ice, there are also ice cream cookie sandwiches, sundaes and shakes. There's also a "secret" menu of sweet combinations listed on the website only.
Get Shaved is the brainchild of Pat and Kristin Roskowick. Pat is a Valley boy, born and bred, who grew in the Sherman Oaks/Van Nuys area. Kristin, a Massachusetts native, is a self-professed “dessert freak.” Both have always loved ice desserts. After honeymooning in Hawaii, they decided to start a shaved ice biz—and the rest is a sweet success story.
Try it. It just might be your new obsession.
