Meatology Mediterranean Grill opened their doors near Universal City—with no shortage of confidence. The restaurant’s menu touts “the best shawarma in L.A.” and “famous” rotisserie chicken (even though the restaurant only opened this month). I’m not ready to co-sign on Meatology’s lofty assessment after trying their shawarma plate, which pairs shaved dark meat (for the most part) with a choice of rice or French fries, salad or soup, roasted tomato and hummus (plain or spicy). I’d recommend the tangy yogurt soup floating with onions and parsley, and spicy hummus folded with jalapeño.
Signature Meatology meatballs consist of large, bacon-wrapped beef meatballs filled with molten mozzarella cheese. The owner apparently isn’t so bullish on Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, gyros or assorted kabobs, but those options all help round out the meaty menu. So do baklava, tiramisu and ice cream—in case you want to cap your meat with something sweet.
Family specials are geared toward bigger groups, packaging whole chickens or two pounds of kabobs with an array of sides.
The white and wood panel space features a mural of a street scene. Eating at Meatology is pleasant enough thanks to full-service, but their food is best suited for takeout.

Food is pretty darn good, too.
