Paula Sheftel and husband Jim temporarily shuttered Humphrey Yogart in March after the business operated in Sherman Oaks since 1984. Longtime regulars should be relieved to learn that the couple revived their frozen yogurt and ice cream concept on November 18. Now Humphrey Yogart operates a counter inside Gelson’s, alongside Coffee Bar and Viktor Benês bakery. The space features a sky blue and white color scheme and deep menu of frozen treats.
Five purple panels hang from the ceiling in front of white subway tiles behind a glass partition, providing choices. “Custom blended yogurt & ice cream” gets prominent placement. Start by choosing a base, possibly sweet vanilla, tart vanilla, chocolate, “really rich” ice cream, vegan organic soy, vegan organic coconut or a “low carb” daily flavor. During my visit, their low-carb flavors consisted of cake batter, Snickers, French vanilla cappuccino and German chocolate.
From there you’re welcome to blend in more than 40 different ingredients, including blackberries, espresso, carob chips, Kit Kat or graham cracker. Add a topping, which might include honey, caramel sauce or whipped cream. Opt for a cup or cone: plain waffle, dipped waffle or wafer. If you’re indecisive, refer to their “Favorites” board with proven combos. Shakes, smoothies and options that go “beyond yogart” also get play.
Humphrey Yogart is open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Before visiting, be conscious of the post-dinner rush. Paula says they get 60% of business after 7 p.m.
