Groundwork Coffee Co., the business that Richard Karno founded in 1990, merged with Jeffrey Chean’s Supreme Bean in 2011. Now Jeffrey is the “chief coffee guy” for the specialty company, which roasts in North Hollywood and operates cafes throughout LA. To start January, they installed a coffee bar and café in the old Southern Pacific-Pacific Electric Station in the NoHo Arts District.
The historic building dates to approximately 1890. Now they’re located next to a Metro station for the Orange and Red lines. The orange-hued depot features worn wooden picnic tables on the patio and a former passenger platform. Inside you’ll find white walls, wood flooring and a mezzanine with exposed beams that hints at the building’s history.
The coffee program includes a two-group La Marzocco espresso machine, cold brew on tap and packages of at least five kinds of coffee beans for sale, all roasted nearby in NoHo.
An overhead breakfast menu features options like fried egg sandwiches on three-cheese sourdough, avocado toast, overnight Muesli, signature granola. Lunch brings made-to-order sandwiches starring smoked turkey, short ribs braised in Bitches Brew coffee blend, and vegetables. They also house a grab-and-go cold case.
