Harris Brown hails from Indianola, Mississippi, home to blues legend B.B. King and Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre. He grew up two doors down from B.B, and started working at his club at 16. He’s worked as an auto broker for the past 20 years now, runs a Sherman Oaks salon, and took over a long vacant building two doors down on Burbank Boulevard, opening My Fish Stop to end November.
The space features sea blue walls, stainless steel tables, speckled counters and—soon enough—a black-and-white visual story on the history of catfish, which is what Harris grew up eating and cooking in the Delta.
The restaurant’s motto explains the process: “You buy it, we fry it!” The result is “Mississippi Soul Fish,” soul food of the sea. In addition to flaky, cornmeal-crusted Delta Pride catfish, which gets delivered twice a week, Harris also serves shrimp, snapper or salmon. Those last two fish are available pan-seared with blackening spices.
Combos are available with names like The Yankee, The Rebel and The Gordy. Dinner combos grow in size. My Rebel consists of a choice of fillet (catfish or snapper) and a choice of two sides. I opted for fried catfish, well-seasoned collard greens, and yams that are boiled with vanilla, ginger and nutmeg, finished with karo syrup, cinnamon and brown sugar, and topped with molten marshmallow. Other sides included French fries, potato chips, cole slaw and hushpuppies.
Neighboring Creme Caramel LA provides desserts like peach cobbler, pecan bar and bread pudding.
