Barbecue has been a San Fernando Valley tradition for years, with homegrown independents like The Bear Pit in Mission Hills and Dr. Hogly Wogly’s Tyler Texas BBQ in Van Nuys remaining popular. The Valley has also proven receptive to outside BBQ brands like Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, which debuted in Dallas and proved their local worth in Woodland Hills and Northridge before their recent opening in Encino.
Hickory smoked meats are available by the half-pound, plate or sandwich. Brisket, pork ribs and pulled pork all get star treatment, though you’ll also find atypical 'cue like Polish-style kielbasa, spiral-cut honey ham and turkey. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit also serves sides like Asiago cheese creamed spinach, bacon and onion green beans, waffle iron fries and fried onion “tanglers.”
The Dickey’s brand dates to 1941, when Travis Dickey debuted in Dallas. This outpost resides at base of double-decker Encino strip mall along Ventura Boulevard. The space features wood panel walls with black-and-white photos of the original owners, tables with blue-and-white checked cloths and a small patio with three tables. Order at the counter before deciding whether to grab-and-go or eat in-house.
