Blinkie’s Donut Emporium, the local Woodland Hills treasure that recently won Ventura Blvd magazine’s donut taste test, has expanded on their classic repertoire. Teresa Ngo has run Blinkie’s since 2003 with baker/father Hugh. She has rolled out a new generation of supple raised donuts inspired by culinary experiences.
“Classic donuts are fun, but I feel like we can experience/try new flavors,” Teresa says. “I’m a foodie, so I get the idea from my favorite dishes, drinks, ice cream.”
Highlights from Blinkie’s new slate include mango donut dusted with Tajín—a spicy-tangy Mexican chile, lime and salt seasoning. Horchata donuts are coated with rice milk glaze and dusted with cinnamon. Pistachio donuts come squiggled with chocolate. Thai tea donuts sport toasted coconut strands. S’mores are downright architectural, with chocolate glaze, whole graham crackers and toasted marshmallows.
Blinkie’s has also introduced fun cereal-centric donuts topped with colorful Fruity Pebbles flakes and Cap’n Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch puffs. Other rotating flavors include green tea, piña colada, cookies ‘n cream, chocolate strawberry and mint chocolate chip. Teresa isn’t done tinkering. She’s also working on sandwich-style cookie dough donuts and thinking about making savory donuts.
Weekends have the widest donut selection. Arrive early, since Blinkie’s sells out by noon.
