It’s not The Regal Beagle, but Jack Tripper would no doubt feel right at home drinking at Mr. Furley's Bar, which recently replaced Downtown Johnny’s to start May in Sherman Oaks. No, the establishment from the team behind BrickYard Pub in Hollywood and North Hollywood isn’t actually named for John Ritter’s landlord on the classic ’70s sitcom Three's Company, but it does refer to a person they call Mr. Furley.
Mr. Furley’s Bar has the curious motto "Lower your expectations"—but as management says, “When you lower your expectations, you can only go up in spirit from there.” Despite the self-deprecating message, Mr. Furley’s Bar does have a lot to offer neighborhood dwellers starting at 7 p.m. each night.
Daniel Ponsky, head bartender, bar manager and a star on the Bar Rescue TV show, has concocted cocktails like the Regal Beagle, the Jack Tripper and the Mr. Furley—a heady mixture of bourbon, brown sugar and apple bitters. He also oversees a beer menu with more than 50 options, including Hangar 24 Orange Wheat, Scrimshaw Pilsner and Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA.
Chef Sly, who previously worked for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon at The Continental martini bar in Beverly Hills, created a menu with dishes like beef skewers with chimichurri sauce, Caesar boats and cheesesteak Stromboli.
A covered patio gives way to an interior with shuffleboard, blackboard menus, high-top tables and a full bar. The logo features an invisible face sporting a bowler hat, handlebar moustache and monocle befitting Mr. Peanut, but it turns out Mr. Furley is down to earth.
