Jeevantham Arokiyasamy has built on the success of Chennai Tiffins in Artesia and San Diego by bringing bold vegetarian Indian food to Woodland Hills, sandwiched between Westfield Topanga mall and Pierce College. Their latest location debuted five months ago between a nail salon and beauty center in a shopping plaza that LA Fitness anchors.
The space features speckled tables, olive green booths, brick and wood panel walls with lime green tiles and a big, steaming cup of chai crafted from wood. Your best bet is to arrive during lunch for their Southern Thali ($13.99), a lunch special that’s available for dine-in only and is more or less bottomless, minus dessert. Fallen palm leaf plates are pilled with an array of southern Indian specialties—all vegetarian—which change daily.
During our visit, the platter included fried lentil donuts called medu vada, white rice, yogurt rice that resembled savory rice pudding, two curries (one with carrots and green beans, the other with tomato and chile base); fried okra with yellow split pea and mustard seed; an array of snacks like papad, pachafi and vadiyalu; and fresh-griddled chappati and dosa. A glass of herbaceous buttermilk and a bite of sweet beetroot halwa completed the flavor party.
If you can’t get to Chennai Tiffins in time for lunch or prefer ordering à la carte, customers still have five menu pages to navigate. Dosas of different shapes are available with fillings like cheese, chile paste and onion gravy masala. Flaky samosas stuffed with potatoes, onions and peas, rice flour pancakes called uthapam, and cottage cheese balls called malai koftha, cooked with onion gravy, are all in play.
To drink, consider Madras coffee, masala tea and lassi that’s sweet, salty or mango.
