In July, Christy Vega kicked off the 60th anniversary celebration of her family’s Sherman Oaks restaurant, Casa Vega, a Ventura Boulevard institution with red leather booths, wrought-iron chandeliers and vivid paintings of Mexican life. She started by hosting a collaborative seven-course dinner with vaunted Baja chef Javier Plascencia. On October 6 the party continues from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., as Casa Vega offers house combos for the same price that father Rafael “Ray” Vega charged when the restaurant first debuted in 1956.
Each house combo costs $2.15 (normally $18.95) and comes with Spanish rice, refried beans and a choice of two main items. Mix and match from a culinary talent pool that includes chile relleno, chicken taco, beef taco, beef enchilada or tamale. $2.15 does not include tax or tip. The restaurant’s devastating margaritas also cost extra.
