Carmela Ice Cream Helps Cool Woodland Hills

The San Fernando Valley continues to benefit from a premium ice cream boom in time for summer. Jessica Mortarotti and Zach Cox recently opened Carmela Ice Cream in Woodland Hills, building on their success in Pasadena and Mid-City.
The duo took over a children’s boutique that adjoins a residential neighborhood south of Ventura Boulevard. Ana Henton’s design includes wood banquettes and tables, a plant-lined shelf overhead and a bar framed with backlit pink onyx that glows at night. Additional patio seating is in the works. Jessica described the look and feel as “a lovely evolution of our stores going forward.”
A menu of removable wood panels highlights available ice cream flavors, which change seasonally and incorporate organic dairy products. Depending on the time of year, you might find strawberry buttermilk, matcha or carrot orange ginger. Scoops are available in cups, house-made waffle cones or cookie sandwiches. Toppings include vanilla bean whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles and crushed almonds.
Carmela Ice Cream also has one of the most ambitious coffee programs in the Valley, with Stumptown Coffee beans and a La Marzocco espresso machine. Yes, they serve affogatos—ice cream drowned with a double shot of espresso.
