Brothers Joey and Billie Anderson have each spent the past 15 years in the craft beer business, most recently working for local chain Stout. Now they’ve turned their attention to running an airy corner bar in the NoHo Arts District called Brews Brothers.
For starters, they’ve got some terrific options like Craftsman Brewing. Founder Mark Jilg is known to be very particular about who gets his Pasadena-brewed ale, so the fact that Brews Brothers was pouring two different kegs during my visit says something about their commitment to craft. They also pour Heavenly Hef and a truly fantastic Belgian-style sour saison called Peachy Keen. The latter is aged two years in oak foeders and finished with Masumoto Family Farm’s peaches and nectarines.
The brothers divide their 42-tap beer list into nine categories, including lagers, hoppy ales and more highly allocated specialty ales—all listed with place of origin, style and ABV. Generally they pour beers that they enjoy drinking, but not always. Billie says, “It might not be a beer we drink, but it’s a good representation of that style.”
For food, the Andersons say they were inspired by three trips they took to Belgium. The menu features mainly artisan sandwiches, cheese and charcuterie plates, and salads.
The longtime beer pros renovated the beautiful bow-and-truss space, which has brick walls and curved wooden rafters punched with skylights. A central “play” area houses two pool tables, a shuffleboard and foosball table. Near the bar a mural of interconnected trees reads, “Rest in Reason, Then Move With Passion.” I’m not sure how much rest the new brew pub owners are getting, but their passion is evident.
