In 2015 locals may have questioned the fate of Artisan Cheese Gallery when Melody Dosch and her parents sold the Studio City cheese and sandwich shop after 10 years in business. 18 months later, new owner Shelley Janson has put Boulevard dwellers at ease by dialing in the décor, upgrading the sandwich offerings and adding a catering arm.
Shelley previously founded Epicurean School of Culinary Arts in West Hollywood, worked as a freelance marketing consultant for women in small business and partnered on company that did marketing strategy for nonprofits. When she moved over the hill from Brentwood so her son could attend high school in the Valley, she was looking for an existing business to buy. A chance meeting with a friend at Artisan Cheese Gallery unearthed her current opportunity.
The space now features blue and white walls and marble-topped tables inside, plus a patio with yellow awning and rustic green and white furniture. Shelley says, “The look I’m trying to achieve here is intimacy.”
Cheese boards ($30 each) now carry themes like American Made, Alegria (Spanish cheeses) and Joie de Vivre (French cheeses) that all come with complementary accompaniments. A smaller Cheese Bites Box ($12) changes slightly with the seasons, but during my visit included Brie, a cow’s milk cheese called Prairie Breeze, Marcona almonds, dried cranberries, fig jam and grapes.
A roster of grilled cheese sandwiches ($12 each) includes options like The Classic, which combines three molten cheddars, and the signature ACG with bacon, cheddar, sautéed apples and sage. Cheese Monger Sandwiches come on baguettes. Expect combos like turkey, Gouda and house-made bacon jam, or French ham with cheddar and beer mustard. All sandwiches come on Rockenwagner breads with house-made pickled vegetables.
Under Shelley’s watch, Artisan Cheese Gallery has also initiated a catering program, special holiday offerings and monthly wine tastings that focus on a specific varietal or flight, paired with discussion.
