Dan’s Super Subs is a classic Woodland Hills that serves some of L.A.’s best deli sandwiches.

The space is pretty simple, with a few sidewalk tables, dining room with black-and-white checked tables, and signed photos from celebs. But the place is most notable for its food.

Let’s begin with their menu, which is downright verbose. It includes sandwiches like Rocky Balboa, Miami Street Beef and Pandora’s Box—available on soft, sesame seed-studded rolls that span either 8 or 13 inches. Each listing specifies whether the sandwich is hot or cold and comes with a catch phrase and full description of every ingredient. For instance, Hula Girl apparently evokes “paradise found on the island beach” by combining cool ham, chicken, roast beef, double cheddar, bacon, avocado and nine different toppings.

Dan’s Super Subs sells more than 40 sandwiches. Narrowing down choices can be tricky. I suggest starting with Mamma Mia, “L.A.’s Newest Italian Masterpiece. Awesome!” The listing for this cold sandwich is “50% more jam-packed than an average sub” and includes house-made Italian avocado spread, capicolla, mortadella, cotto salami, dry salami, Bologna, Provolone, mustard, mayo, iceberg lettuce, tomato, olives, mild peppers, onions, diced pickles, salt, pepper, olive oil, vinegar, oregano and grated Parmesan.

The rest of the menu includes “meal size salads,” soft drinks and chips. Really, though, when you’re eating at a restaurant called Dan’s Super Subs, you should just eat a sub.
