Marshmallow maven Ann Hickey-Williams showcases her expertise—with a twist—by opening the custom s’mores shop Plush Puffs in Burbank. The retail outpost builds on more than a decade of success running a hand-made marshmallow company.
With her most recent endeavor, Ann makes 12 different kinds of marshmallows that are singed (by the staff) and then served on a stick or between Graham crackers. The torching is kind of dramatic to watch and creates treats that are hot and gooey.
I opted for build-your-own s’mores ($7.50) with a choice of Graham cracker, three marshmallows, sauce and three toppings. I filled traditional house-baked Graham crackers with toasted coconut, strawberry wild and luscious lemony meringue marshmallows. They slathered one Graham cracker with dark chocolate and topped it with shaved almonds and toasted coconut strands before forming a s’mores sandwich.
Indecisive customers can order prescribed combos like the Happy Birthday, Salty Turtle and Mexican-inspired Ixtapa. In all cases, s’mores are best eaten hot, so grab a seat on the store’s bench or at a single sidewalk table instead of taking the treat to-go.
Marshmallows are available in 1/2-pound, 1-pound and 2-pound containers. Plush Puffs also sells chocolate-covered marshmallow bars, hot cocoa bobbing with marshmallows, and brew Cognoscenti coffee.
