Square Bar Cafe serves the kind of creative tea drinks you’d typically only find in Little Saigon or the San Gabriel Valley, but the burgeoning chain’s latest location opened this summer right in the middle of an outdoor mall: The Village at Topanga. This glass square booth with colorful boba wallpaper has an ambitious flavored tea program that captures pretty much every trend of note right now in Asia and L.A. and delivers them with flair.
More than 20 different blended, bottled and tea drinks are available. Particularly bold beverages include Lychee Peachee with green mango, Mango Slush and Taro Fantasy. With beverages so enticing, it makes sense that they’d offer a “split cup” that allows you to double down on variety. We opted for a half-serving of strawberry hibiscus tea with lime and mango jelly cubes, and the “fifty-fifty original” ice milk with whipped cream, pudding, caramel and honey boba. The café also serves boba drinks in oversized light bulbs (yours to keep), which are practically begging to be Instagrammed.
Square Bar Cafe also sells salted cheese cream—a rich iced tea topping that’s sweeping China and Taiwan and recently landed in L.A. Servers spoon dollops of rich cream cheese that’s been whipped into a foam on top of your choice of tea: oolong, black, Assam or green.
For customers with simpler tastes and no photographic needs, Square Bar will gladly serve more basic tea or coffee drinks.
