Calabasas, by all accounts, is an ice cream-parched city. Just in time for summer, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams will provide relief by opening a branch at The Commons at Calabasas shopping center. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams joins a dining lineup at The Commons at Calabasas that already includes Sugarfish, King’s Fish House and Marmalade Café—and will soon add Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop.
This shop is part of a chain from Jeni Britton Bauer that originated in Ohio back in 2002. She favors whole ingredients and dairy from grass-pastured cows. Jeni’s now runs 25 locations in all, including Larchmont Village, Los Feliz and Venice. Signature flavors include brown butter almond brittle, goat cheese with red cherries, and wildberry lavender. Each season brings new flavors, and Jeni promises a summertime collaboration with Stone Brewing.
Jeni explains that the three LA-area shops have been successful and that our city has been among the top five mail order cities for more than a decade. “The farm-to-table crowd in California got it immediately,”Jeni says. “People would read the early coverage in Food & Wine or come to Columbus, have their first Jeni’s experience, then go back home and start having our ice cream shipped across the country—because you couldn’t get anything like it anywhere else. So we always look to see where we have pockets of customers from our mail order business, and we happen to have a lot around Calabasas. Plus The Commons at Calabasas is just so well done.”
