INTRO Art Gallery & Chef’s Table is the Friday and Saturday night pop-up from chef Paul Shoemaker, GM Rob Ciancimino and Manny Marroquin. It operates at the North Hollywood former home to Evolution Dance Studio.
Paul, who trained under revered chefs like Thomas Keller and Alain Ducasse, consistently showcases seasonal artistry on the plate. To round out a night-long experience that also includes music and art, Rob is also curating a rotating roster of artists who grace the dining room’s walls for six-week stints. Jens Schmidt was the opening artist, displaying abstract canvases.
January 12 marked the debut of Oscar Meza’s “Between the Lines” paintings. Oscar is a 25-year-old professional skateboarder who was inspired by similarly artistic skateboarders like Danny Minnick, Chad Muska and Harif Guzman. He developed a style he calls “geometrical and symbolic.” With his latest collection, he encourages observers “to look between the lines, not just in the art, but in life as well.” This selection dovetails nicely with the fact that Paul grew up skateboarding.
Rob described the artist selection process, saying, “I’ve been very fortunate that there are so many talented artists in the city and many have reached out to me. When choosing an artist to show here the biggest thing for me is to show someone who’s as passionate about their work as Chef Paul and I are about ours. And we love when the artist is a big food and wine fan and has a following that can also appreciate what we do with our dinners. The whole idea of the space is to bring people together to celebrate art and food! As chef Paul is such a culinary artist himself.”
INTRO’s next artist is TBD.
