Alfred Coffee founder Joshua Zad marks the start of a new era in San Fernando Valley coffee with the opening of his stylish company’s fifth branch on Studio City’s Ventura Place. The Valley has long been thin on specialty coffee, and Instagram-friendly Alfred, which has the popular “But First, Coffee” tagline, should upgrade the area's sense of flavor and fashion by opening on September 12.
Zad will continue to brew Stumptown Coffee and will also serve Yeastie Boys Bagels, kombucha on tap, ceremonial-grade matcha and Café Gratitude food. Two specialty coffee drinks even have their own hashtag: #10dollarlatte and #alfredcone.
Joshua commented on the design, saying, “Looks-wise, think lots of dark mahogany wood and all green tones. It’s going to be very worn-in and warm, like a turn-of-the-century pub.” Expect tables and chairs inside, along with a covered patio—about 40 seats total.
What drew Joshua to the this particular location? He says, “Ventura Place is the Melrose Place of the Valley—aka the best street. Joan’s On Third opening there really planted the flag and established that, as well as the farmers market.”
