Baked potato thins, M & M cookies, cobb salad, onion rings, pizza, and fettuccine alfredo? Not your typical “diet” food choices, but in the world according to Hungry Girl phenom, Lisa Lillien, items normally associated with junk food can exist — with a twist, that is.
Lillien, an Encino resident, is a #1 New York Times best-selling author who makes watching what you eat fun and fanciful. What originated just over a decade ago as a daily newsletter is now a multi-million dollar industry that includes books, TV shows and product endorsements. Now, she is back with her ninth book, The Hungry Girl Diet. Although she has sold over two million Hungry Girl books, this is her first official “diet” tome.
Lillien worked with registered dietician David Grotto to create a four-week plan (plus maintenance) based on her signature diet philosophies emphasizing natural foods with lean protein, fat-free and reduced dairy, fresh fruits, veggies and healthy fats. There is no deprivation because the foods you prepare are basically deconstructed versions of the more indulgent variety — with a similar taste sensation without the fat and calories, but with her signature supersize portions. There are even recipes for decadent sweets and beverages (alcohol, too!). It’s flexible, customizable and works with dining out.
Check out The Hungry Girl Diet book and subscribe to the Hungry Girl daily newsletter for recipes, as well as super fun and helpful tips and tricks.
