Experience NoHo
A bustling corridor comes alive when you see it on foot.
With fantastic restaurants, art galleries and theatres, there’s plenty to see, do and eat in the thriving NoHo Arts District, all within easy walking distance. The Red Line Metro stop to North Hollywood drops you in the heart of the action on Lankershim Boulevard.
Begin at Cella Gallery (1) (11135 Weddington Street, #112)—a quirky space that exhibits some of the most interesting and “out there” collections of original fine art, with new group art shows every six weeks.
Across the main drag is The Federal Bar (2) (5303 Lankershim Boulevard), offering burgers, drinks and pub food downstairs, live bands (and dining) upstairs. Gigs are usually free, though the occasional $10 cover charge won’t break the bank.
An old vaudeville house dating back to 1926, the historic El Portal (3) (5269 Lankershim Boulevard) is a mid-sized theatre that hosts musicals and ballet. Now playing through August is “Beatlemania”—a pop celebration of the Fab Four.
The new Laemmle NoHo 7 multiplex (4) (5240 Lankershim Boulevard) shows new releases and art-house fare on large screens. Kick back in comfortable seats and munch on the freshest popcorn in town.
Get your gourmet pizza fix at PitFire Pizza (5) (5211 Lankershim Boulevard) and dine alfresco next to the outdoor fire pit in the open courtyard. The Burrata Pie and the Greens, Egg & Ham thin-crust pizzas are musts.
A small detour takes you to a new theatre, The Road on Magnolia (6) (10747 Magnolia Boulevard), for weekend productions of new plays and free play readings every Monday night.
The Antaeus Company (7) (5112 Lankershim Boulevard) consistently impresses with their dual-cast productions of classic plays. Later this year they’ll be presenting David Ives’ wicked translation/adaptation of 17th-century playwright Pierre Corneille’s farce The Liar.
Continuing down the street takes you to HaHa’s Comedy Club & Café (8) (5010 Lankershim Boulevard)—an intimate, lounge-like club that features a constantly rotating cast of comics from around the country.
Drop in (or phone for delivery) to the bustling industrial kitchen Healthyca (9) (4724 Lankershim Boulevard) for the freshest and most inventive combination salads, scrumptious sandwiches and delicious smoothies and juices, all with an emphasis on high-quality, mostly organic ingredients and produce—even the salmon is wild caught. (Open only on weekdays.)
